Should I File a Homeowners Insurance Claim?

What is homeowners insurance?

Homeowners insurance is a type of property insurance that covers private homes. It is an insurance policy that combines various personal insurance protections, which can include losses occurring to one’s home, its contents, loss of use (additional living expenses), or loss due to liability issues.

How do I file a claim?

Homeowners can file a claim with their insurance agent or company by contacting them after an incident occurs. The first step is typically to call your agent and describe what happened. Your agent will then likely ask you for more details about the incident, as well as any proof you may have (e.g. pictures, police report, etc.). Once the agent has all the necessary information, they will start working on your claim.

When should I not file a claim?

There are certain situations when it may not be worth it to file a homeowners insurance claim. These include if the deductible is higher than the damage done, if filing will result in loss of a discount, or if premiums will increase as a result. Essentially, you’ll need to weigh the pros and cons of filing a claim before making a decision.

When should I file a claim?

On the other hand, there are also situations where it may be worth it to go ahead and file that claim. These include if no claims have been filed in recent years (as this could help keep premiums low), if the damage is serious enough that it would be costly to repair on your own, or if the amount lost is substantial. Again, it’s important to weigh all your options before taking any action.

Filing a homeowners insurance claim isn’t always cut-and-dry.

There are pros and cons to consider before taking action. In general, you’ll want to think about whether the deductible is higher than the damage done, if filing will result in loss of a discount or increase in premiums, how many claims have been filed in recent years, how serious the damage is , and how much money is actually at stake. By taking all these factors into account, you can make an informed decision about whether or not filing a homeowners insurance claim is right for you.
